Advent Day 4 – Galatians 4 Verses 1 – 7 (Song – What a gift of Grace)
Bible Reading – Galatians 4 Verses 1-7
What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
Opening Prayer
Loving God, we come before you today as we read these glorious words of scripture. We thank you that Jesus came into the world to restore our relationship with you. That through his coming he enables us to be your children, with all the blessings that brings. We thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is ever present in our hearts. Amen
Reflection
Today’s passage is wonderful and awesome. We are all accepted as children of God because of Jesus. Not only that, but we are empowered in our daily lives, by the gift of the Spirit; the Spirit which inspires us, guides and encourages us. The Spirit which sometimes, in our over enthusiasm holds us back and slows us down. As we prepare our Christmas gifts for each other and gather together the things we will need for our celebrations, let us not forget the greatest gift of all – Jesus our Saviour.
I am often frustrated by “church” – our need to have endless meetings to decide what we should be doing. It seems that often, when someone has an idea prompted by the Holy Spirit, they are either shouted down or their idea is kicked into the “long grass”. I am all for discernment and validation of ideas, but not to the point where we stifle what could be God’s plan because it does not fit our own ideas.
I am sure I have spoken of this frustration before but, at least in my mind, the promptings of the Spirit are for action not discussion!
A time for your own reflection
Read the passage again and spend a little time thinking of how the passage speaks to you. The wonder of scripture is that there is always something new to discover and each passage speaks to us in our own need and circumstances.
Only if you feel you want to – share your thoughts with someone. God inspires our thoughts and you never know, the person you share with may be waiting to hear what you have to say.
Song
Here is the next song –
“What a gift of Grace”
Today’s song is one of the first ones I wrote as part of this series. I wanted to stress the fact and the wonder of God’s gift to us; that through the nativity of Jesus, we are all able to be children of God. On reflection I probably would have used Son in the second line of the chorus rather than child. Perhaps I will change it at some point in the future. I was using a free version of the A.I. engine when this was written and it did not allow re-creation of sections of the song. I now subscribe and am able to “tinker” with words without needing to recreate the whole song. So I hope you will not be put off by the theological mystery of the Trinity.

[Verse 1]
Look, what a gift of grace,
God has offered us,
We can take our place,
As children called by God.
[Chorus]
Child of God found in a stable,
Child of God found in our hearts,
Through this child we are able,
In his family, to play our parts.
[Verse 2]
Though it is not clear,
What turns our lives will make;
When we meet our Saviour here,
We will know the way to take.
[Chorus]
Child of God found in a stable,
Child of God found in our hearts,
Through this child we are able,
In his family, to play our parts.
[Verse 3]
So in the Fathers’ love,
We share a family part,
He sends the Spirit, from above,
To live within our hearts.
[Chorus]
Child of God found in a stable,
Child of God found in our hearts.
Through this child we are able,
In his family, to play our parts.
[Verse 4]
So in the Fathers’ love,
We share a family part,
He sends the Spirit, from above,
To live within our hearts.
[Chorus]
Child of God found in a stable,
Child of God found in our hearts.
Through this child we are able,
In his family, to play our parts.
Prayer
Loving and gracious God, we thank you that you sent your Son into the world – the greatest of gifts freely given to us. He came to restore our relationship with you, so we thank you that you have made it possible for us all to be in your family. Help us to embrace the freedom and love you have given us.
Help us to speak the truth in love and to stand firm in our faith.
We confess that there are times when we seek our own way and think we can manage on our own. Times when we are filled with struggles and doubts. We thank you for the presence of your Holy Spirit, always in our hearts and comforting us in these difficult times. Help us to listen to your words to us. Encourage us to action, in your name, so that we will draw others to you and glorify your name.
Help us to both grow in faith and approach ever closer to you every day of our lives. Amen.
