Advent Day 3 – Colossians Chapter 1 Verses 15 – 20 (Song – God to his children comes)

Colossians Chapter 1 Verses 15 – 20

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Opening Prayer

Lord, we thank you for your creation: how everything knits together and is held in your hand. We thank you that you came as a human baby to be one of us; that through your teachings, you show us how to live our lives. That through your death and resurrection we can know that we are part of your family. Thank you that we are loved, cherished and given the promise of heaven. Amen.

Reflection

There is more than enough for several sermons in these few verses but I promised to be brief so…

Although we celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas day, it is good for us to be reminded,  as we continue our Advent journey, who Jesus is.

At this time of year, we can be tempted to only think of the coming of Jesus as a baby, but that would be a mistake. Jesus is God, the source of all that has, does and will exist, and the one to whom all things should be focused.

Through him we learn how to be human – How to be what God wants us to be. He teaches us what it means to be church – not the buildings or the fellowship within the church, but how we encourage everyone to come into a relationship with God.

There is a worship song “Jesus be the centre” and in our reading today, in a few short verses, we see the ways in which Jesus is the centre of reality. He has restored our relationship with God through his birth, death and resurrection.

A time for your own reflection

Read the passage again and spend a little time thinking of how the passage speaks to you. The wonder of scripture is that there is always something new to discover and each passage speaks to us in our own need and circumstances.

Only if you feel you want to – share your thoughts with someone. God inspires our thoughts and you never know, the person you share with may be waiting to hear what you have to say.

Song

Here is the next song –

“God to his children comes”

I have tried to vary the styles of music in this set of songs. A bouncy “country” tune today. As I look around the world at sights of wonder and share them with the people I love it makes my heart glad. This joyful tune expresses some of that joy. Sometimes it is good to be reminded that the Jesus we come to in the stable is also the source of everything. Still he comes to his children.

[Verse 1]

Before time, in the void,
The word was and is God,
He spoke and all things came to be,
Life to all things, he brought.

[Verse 2]

He leaves his divine form,
The Word dwells in our way,
That he can speak and teach us all,
To understand his ways.

[Chorus]

With joy we see a babys’ face,
The eternal Fathers’ only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

[Verse 3]

By him were all things made;
He holds them in his hand;
He is the head of all that is,
The sea, the sky, the land.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Father’s only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

[Verse 4]

By him were all things made;
He holds them in his hand;
He is the head of all that is,
The sea, the sky, the land.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Father’s only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

[Verse 5]

The angels sing their songs,
To tell of this childs’ birth,
The love of our eternal God,
Comes down to the earth.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Father’s only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

Prayer

Loving God, as we read these words from scripture we can see how much you love us.

The wonder of your divine form. The power of your creative nature. And yet you come to us your children to ensure that we are able to see you.

We are indeed filled with joy as we look into the manger at Christmas and see the radiant face of the baby sleeping there. God of everything –  present with us on earth; you are beyond our comprehension, understanding and explanation.

So, we simply bow our heads and worship you. Our God. Amen.
