2nd Sunday in Advent – (Song – You simple men of hearts sincere)
by admin · Published · Updated

The second of the hymns from Charles Wesley's "Hymns for the Nativity of our Lord".
Today we have, "You simple men of hearts sincere" which is the first hymn in the original book.
A hymn with the subject of the visitation of the angels to the shepherds. A nice bouncy folk tune to this one reflecting the excitement felt by the shepherds.
As "usual" the original words are in the left column so you can see how I have revised them.
The original tune used for this hymn is DUKE - which we more normally use for the hymn "Jesus shall reign where'er the sun"
Credit again goes to Mr Wesley for his magnificent hymn writing and Suno.com for the wonders of the music generation they have made possible.
I hesitate to claim copyright on these re-writes but under the terms of the Suno licence, the music is owned by me and possibly copyright me. However, copyright is a minefield at the best of times and more so in the A.I. world.
[Verse 1]
You simple men of hearts sincere,
Shepherds watching flocks by night,
Fear not to see an angel near,
Nor tremble at this glorious light.
[Verse 2]
A messenger of the heavenly King,
I come, your fears to chase away;
Good tidings of great joy I sing,
Good News to all I bring this day.
[Verse 3]
To you is born this happy day,
A Savior by our host adored;
Our God in Bethlehem born today,
Make haste to worship Christ the Lord.
[Verse 4]
By this the Savior of mankind,
The incarnate God is revealed;
The Babe, wrapped in cloth you’ll find,
And humbly in a manger laid.
[Verse 5]
A messenger of the heavenly King,
I come, your fears to chase away;
Good tidings of great joy I sing,
Good News to all I bring this day.
[Verse 6]
To you is born this happy day,
A Savior by our host adored;
Our God in Bethlehem born today,
Make haste to worship Christ the Lord.
[Verse 7]
By this the Savior of mankind,
The incarnate God is revealed;
The Babe, wrapped in cloth you’ll find,
And humbly in a manger laid.
Make haste to worship Christ the Lord!
Charles Wesley revised Chris Hancock 2024
1. Ye simple men of heart sincere,
Shepherds who watch your flocks by night,
Start not to see an angel near,
Nor tremble at this glorious light.
2. “A herald from the heavenly King,
I come, your every fear to chase;
Good tidings of great joy I bring,
Great joy to all the fallen race.
3. “To you is born on this glad day,
A Savior by our host adored;
Our God in Bethlehem survey,
Make haste to worship Christ the Lord.
4. By this the Savior of mankind,
Th’incarnate God shall be displayed;
The Babe ye wrapped in swaths shall find,
And humbly in a manger laid.
